Soccer, Holland, Casino Eredivisie, Pick on 19.8.2006: Excelsior vs. Roda Kerkrade

Filed under: English version, Picks — mato at 3:25 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2006

I don't think we will see such odds again during the rest of the season with Excelsior playing a mediocre opponent. Ok, Excelsior had some good matches last year in the Dutch second division but the difference between the two Dutch leagues is big. Meanwhile, almost all good players of the third team of Rotterdam left the club: Daniel Rijaard (ADO Den Haag), Civard Sprockel (Vitesse), Mark Otten (NEC), Brett Holman (NEC), Wouter Artz (Cercle Brugge). They signed one "important" name, Czech midfielder Jarda Simr from Amica Wronki, but he didn't make any goals during the last four seasons and besides Marinus Dijkhuizen is the Excelsior offense pretty poor. Roda JC on the other hand is not very special either, but could make a few surprises during the season. A big loss is the exit of German midfielder Simon Cziommer to AZ Alkmaar, but Cristiano, Cissé and Oper can be dangerous upfront for the Kerkrade team. Nevertheless, I think Excelsior is one of the main candidates for relegation this season, and will have many difficulties in each game not to lose. Roda JC tied their last friendly game 1-1 with Real Zaragoza and other results vs Alemannia Aachen (6-0), NEC (1-1) Bergen/Mons (1-0) were not so bad either. Roda's ex-Schalke/Hertha/Koln trainer Huub Stevens wants to start this season good, and the draw makes it possible for him.

Soccer, Czech republic, Gambrinus Liga, Pick on 19.8.2006: Sparta Praha vs. Pribram

Filed under: English version, Picks — mato at 3:22 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2006

Early pick because of odds. I wont touch odds lower than 1,4 but if bookies offered such prize i took it.
Sparta is not in amazing form and i am disappointed with performance shown but on the other hand defence is trong enough to compete with any league attack and Pribram doesnt have the stronghest one. Moreover after point taken from Most and victory in match against Kladno on home ground this is time to bet against Pribram IMO.
Problem is Spartas attack. Captain Sivok should be finally back in the squad against Pribram and Sylvestre will probably have more chnaces to proove his creativity supported by Simak. Also back Drobny is back after injury. Sparta will miss back Homola(suspension) in comparison with last match but he will be IMO replaced more than adequately. In my opinion Sivoks leadership skills with 2 creative players and forwards who are able score goals (IMO) but didnt proove it so far in this season, will be enough to beat Pribram who will only defend.
Everyone knows that biggest threat in Pribrams jersey is midfieler Otepka and his free kicks and i hope Sparta will not repeat same mistake as Most.

Soccer, England, Premier League, Pick on 19.8.2006: Arsenal vs. Aston Villa

Filed under: English version, Picks — mato at 2:30 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2006

And the first round of Premiership is here. Will the Gunners manage to win thier first game on new Emirates stadium?Of course they will, and with the big style.Last seasson they were average. They finished 4th which is very unussual for them but they were runners-up in CL.This seasson they are preparing to to hit the top of table.Chelsea is real favourite for winning but they will probably have slow start, unlike last year.So this will be real chance for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.Like Van Persie said,Arsenal have to start good so they can later fight for tittle. This season Arsenal brought Tomas Rosicky, very good player, and they released Pires. With cognizable style of play, short passes, attacking style I don't see Aston Villa can do anything to stop Gunners from their first triumf on new stadium.Villa had bad season last year. They finished 16th.This year they didn't brought any new players so their game will be same, poor like last year.

Past meetings
:
31.12.2005 Aston Villa - Arsenal 0 - 0
05.02.2005 Aston Villa - Arsenal 1 - 3
16.10.2004 Arsenal - Aston Villa 3 - 1
18.01.2004 Aston Villa - Arsenal 0 - 2
27.08.2003 Arsenal - Aston Villa 2 - 0
05.04.2003 Aston Villa - Arsenal 1 - 1
30.11.2002 Arsenal - Aston Villa 3 - 1
17.03.2002 Aston Villa - Arsenal 1 - 2
09.12.2001 Arsenal - Aston Villa 3 - 2

Arsenal won most times.Last time it was 0-0.I don't think that catastrofe will happen twice in a row.

Soccer, Scotland, 2. Division, Pick on 19.8.2006: Cowdenbeath vs. Brechin City

Filed under: English version, Picks — mato at 2:05 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2006

Everybody, who is a little interested in Scottish football, knows the Gretna story.Promotions to upper leagues year after year. Now I see a team, which is very similar to Gretna.Very confident team from Cowdenbeath, which calls itself ,,The blue Brazilians,, starts this season amazingly.

After promotion from 3rd division in last season, ,,newcomers,, won 4 of 4 competitive matches.2 in Cup, 2 in the league, both with impressive score (at home 6:1 wtih Alloa; on road 0:4 in Ayr).
C´beath is really strong at home (last season in lower league, but still great - 14-2-2; score 51:18).This season they have very succesfull strikers:
4 goals - Pat Clarke
3 goals - Liam Buchanan
3 goals - Markus Paatelainen
3 goals - Scott Dalziel
and what is more important, all of them are able to play today, I expect them to add some goals to their accounts.
Only absences for home team are: David Hay and Dougie Hill are still injured, but these injuries are long terms, and C´beath played all matches this season without them.
Coach of home team Mixu Paatelainen doesn´t underestimate away team at all. They have weaker start, but are one of the candidates to promotion.
But I expect they will not bring anything from Central Park (where 500 spectators are expected for this match).Mainly because of big absences of guest team.
Members of starting 11s, sometimes maybe substitutes Gary Bollan, Scott Devlin, Scott Walker and Stuart Ferguson are still out, Steven Hampshire and Charlie King are doubtfull.
Brechin has 1 point from 2 previous matches, when it drew on road in average Peterhead and lost at home.Just one goal scored, 2 conceded.
When I consider recent form of both teams, previous matches, absences and the enthusiasm of home team also, I have to predict home team to win.I will try HCP HW also.
